DC Internet Safety

Donna Duvall
I don't do a lot of social networking - don't have Twitter or Snap Chat. I do use Facebook, mostly to view posts of the cute and charming things that my grandchildren are doing, and also close friends and relatives. I don't have my address, email, phone number, or even the city I live in posted. When I joined FB I listed the college I graduated and my employment. If I knew how to take those off, I would. I only allow posts to those listed as close friends and relatives. I consider myself a FB "stalker". I like to see the posts of others, but rarely post anything myself. When I quit teaching, I allowed former students to become FB friends, but rarely contact them, except to wish them happy birthday, or offer congratulations for a life event, such as college graduation.

I like to see photos and videos of my grandchildren and even though I know one set of parents limits the audience to which the photos are visible, I'm not sure about the other, and will chat with them about who is allowed to see their photos.

One family shares where they are traveling before and during their trips. I have suggested that posting that information is, depending on the audience, an open invitation to burglary.

The company I work for monitors social media for negative comments by employees. Those at management level seem to know this, but I'm not sure if it is common knowledge among the rank and file. It is not mentioned in company training. I have never heard of anyone being disciplined or fired for making negative comments.
