I looked at both my Facebook and Intsagram accounts. I have always made sure I have them set to as private as possible. I will say, Instagram was easier to "lock down" so that it would only show a profile picture but nothing else. Facebook is set so that only the most basic information is available and i have it set so any thing I am tagged in has to be approved by me to be posted.
