The social networking site I explored was Facebook. I only got it because I wanted to transfer a game I play onto a new device and that was the easiest way to do it. I have it set that only I can see it. When I was checking around settings it was nice that they have Security Check-Up to walk you through. For added protection you could turn on Two Factor Authentication and Alerts for Unrecognized Logins. Also protect your password and log out when you use a shared computer with others will help keep you safe. Staying with friends will keep you safer too then going public.
