I have a Facebook page, but it's really not mine. It belongs to my dog. My dog has very few friends, maybe 12. And that is fine with me. Neither my dog nor I ever post anything online. I am not a member of any other social media. This places me at a disadvantage, sometimes, when I discuss such media with students. But I try to use my lack of social media membership as teaching moments, by explaining why I feel as I do. There is nothing that I would want to share with hundreds of other people. And I do not believe the Internet provides the privacy that students believe. Something I might say today could be embarrassing 10 years from now. I did check the privacy options on this page today, and I am as safe as I can be. But that is still not fully safe. That too is a teaching moment.
Also, as the old saying goes: Nobody knows you're a dog on the Internet. In other words, be safe!
