I have a Facebook account and am always monitoring the privacy settings. A few years ago the setting must have changed. I had someone call me cell phone and they said they got my number from Facebook. It was someone that was a mutual friend of a friend so it was not a huge deal but it did make me rethink what information I have out there for people to see. I do not accept friend requests from anyone I do not know or any students.
You mentioned one thing that really bothers me about the Internet -- the social media and related companies that publish my phone number. My age. My address. I always kept one phone number as very private, kind of a family hotline. Until I started receiving business sales calls and I'd ask how or why they were calling me -- they said my number was on the Internet.
