One step we have taken at home is that we have family sharing on our phones. We are able to track downloads of apps and also track where the kids are at.
At the school I work at we use Go Guardian. This piece of software allows us to track students and their searches while using their school google account. There are over 400 flagged terms with in Go Guardian that if a student searches or uses these words, an email would be sent to our administrator. Some of the key words are suicide, porn, etc
