Several years ago I was doing a lesson in class where students and I were using a shared file that was posted on board via a projector. The file also had a chat option. Some of the students thought it would be funny to type silly things in the chat. Though students were redirected and told to stop, it quickly escalated into inappropriate comments and detentions. It made me feel frustrated that students would not use the technology appropriately. It also was uncomfortable for other students to read what was posted. In the future, I will likely not use technology that allows this function. However, if I do I will have a discussion before we begin on digital respect and clear expectations of digital behavior.
