I can think of a student who was being bullied by others out on Facebook. This student had expressed an idea that the others did not like and they were berating this student mercilessly. The others were 'friends' from another state. When I suggested to this student to block them or even stop using Facebook, they could not grasp the concept that they did not have to continue putting themself in this situation. Not being on Facebook was social suicide, so they continued. The group who was doing the bullying was using digital media to inflict pain and punishment in a very inapproriate manner. I wonder if they would have said all these hurtful things, if they had to say it in person, to this student's face. It is easy to hide behind the keyboard.
