Norms: It is not uncommon for students to post every element of their lives on a variety of social media platforms several times a day. Just as in personal interactions, these are not always appropriate or productive.
Responsibilities: Everyone, not just students, has a responsibility to scrutinize their online activity for appropriateness and ethical content. First amendment rights to expression are important but we are all part of a larger community and as citizens it is our responsibility to consider the rights and interests of others. Students in particular should be mindful not to post items that will potentially endanger others' reputations or physical/emotional well-being. For example, posting pictures of minors drinking or engaging in other illegal activities, revealing the location of someone in a potentially vulnerable situation or being aware of behavior that could be categorized as bullying.
