User rights is a tricky concept in some ways because students see the digital world as such an extension of themselves. They are connected all the time to information in various ways, from social media to just “google it”. Through their lens, it is just information. That is why we need to teach students to think critically instead of regurgitating information.
Addressing rights is as important as addressing integrity or honesty. We can teach it, but for students to use digital responsibility requires diligence on the teacher’s part. These norms for digital citizenship should include full access for all with honesty, dignity, and safety.
