DC: rights and responsibilities

Through technology, students have access to so many things, good and not so good.  I believe, as educators, we have a responsibility to teach and guide our youngsters on what is appropriate, as well as what is not.  We try to show our students how to be polite and interact with each other appropriately in person.  We need to carry this over to technology as well.  They need to understand that once they put things "out there", it is truly "out there."

I agree that we, as educators, have a responsibility to teach our students on what is appropriate regarding technology.  At our school, we invest a significant amount of time to teaching social skills, but frequently forget that much of our students 'social' engagements occur on the platform of technology.  I believe that just as we teach students how to ask a friend to play, or how to disagree respectfully in discussion, we need to be teaching our students how to be respectful and responsible online as well as with the multiple devices they use each day.

It is often said that children act before they think about consequences. Everyone needs to realize that whatever is posted is "forever."
