One thing that has always made me snicker is that social media companies use your information and your online habits to push to you stories and products that fit the user.  This of course makes sense from a business model, but has significant safety and security issues.  Twitter and Facebook in their settings allow you to switch on and off their tracking ability, with the default being sent to on.
