I actually took a look at some of the main ones I use a lot such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, and Snapchat. The older I am getting, the less I post and use all of these, however I still open them up and use them more of a tool to stay in touch or up to date with what is going on in my friends and families lives when I do not get to see them regularly.
A few years ago I had a few students who were bored in study hall one day tell me they were looking up all of their teachers social media accounts for fun, and they started asking me questions about my family and friends and people I knew. It had me a little taken back, as I was confused how they knew this information since my accounts were all secure and private unless they were friends with me, unless I was mistaken, and I was.
That evening I made sure to take a look at all of my social media accounts and I realized that my Facebook account was not set to private my eyes only, rather it was still set to public, for everyone to see. I knew I had went in and changed it when I had gotten hired as a teacher, but I think what ended up happening is that I made the changes to my privacy settings and I did not ever hit save or update, rather I must have just exited or clicked out of the app and thought I was good. I think it is important for people to double check, or even have someone else who is maybe not friends with you on social media check to see if they have access to information on your accounts. You can never be too safe.
