Digital Citizenship Internet Safety

Lila Maher
One of the sites I explored was the Instagram app.  Through this app, users are asked to connect the app to their Facebook.com account, their photo albums, contacts, and Twitter account.  Users do have the option to not connect these sites as it could be used to steal or use information from those sites as well.  Users are then able to set their profiles/accounts to private which can protect information and allows more control for users to share the information they want on their profile that those who have not been added as a friend may see.  This includes their profile picture, number of post, followers, and people they follow, their username, and whatever they chose to put in their bio.  Instagram users also have the ability to tag people and locations on their pictures.  Once a link is clicked on, whether that be a person's username that was tagged, or the location tagged, the link then provides that information.  It will then take the viewer to that person's personal page, and can show the location on a Google map format that shows the address the user was at.  Instagram also shows what time/date the user posted.  This can be an unsafe measure as stalkers or predators can use these tags as a way to find their targets, and also a way to exploit them.
