I feel the internet is an entirely different world but is as scary as growing up in the past and worrying about stranger danger. We learned when out in public not to talk to strangers, but this is even harder online because we have to navigate without seeing the stranger face to face. I noticed that on Facebook a social media site I use quite often I need to check my privacy settings frequently. I did not realize that I had marked for the use of search engines to link to my account. I have now changed that setting. I also made sure that only my friends who I have accepted can look me up through email or phone not the public or friends of friends. I also made sure that friend requests did not come from everyone, but only from friends of my friends. I made sure my posts were only seen by my accepted friends and no one else. I am going to check my other social media sites too. I think this is so important to talk to my kids about. I have grown kids but they are still vulnerable and I want them to be safe. People can pretend to be somebody else online and may not always tell the truth. I feel setting up my settings will help for the most part avoid strangers because they should be screened through friends I trust.
