Digital Citizenship Internet Safety

David Gerlach
I can't imagine letting young adolescents on to Facebook and having their own account.  This seems like a daunting task for an adult. I now understand why fights would break out between students I had in 8th grade over comments on social media. I am concerned that this takes out the personal factor and makes it easier for students to get involved with the "wrong" people.  My wife and kids were involved in Facebook for a short time and now have back way off.  Also, I have heard students say that they move every year or so from one platform to another. They ae tired of the adults following them.

I had my wife show me her Facebook settings.  It is really amazing and daunting to see all the things you have to go through and know to set up an account. I can see where it would easy for a kiddo (or any adult) to just open an account and leave many of these settings open. I also am thinking that I might want to set up an account because in one of the videos I was watching says it is safer to have you set up an account so someone can not steal your identity.  Food for thought.
