Digital Media Misuse

Anna Crenshaw
I recently changed the name of my private wifi at home.  Since it was related to Harry Potter, I posted a picture of the new name to a Facebook Harry Potter fan group.  After a few hours, I got a couple of comments.  One thing that I had not noticed when I took the picture was that I had inadvertently also gotten a shot of my IP address.  A few people told me to take it down because other people could use my IP address for inappropriate actions.  I had to research this a bit.  I did not know that this could happen.  Thankful that someone pointed it out to me, but sad that I have to be so careful with even a seemingly harmless picture.

Thankfully someone was looking out for you to let you know that was in your picture. I agree with you that you posted a simple picture and it could have caused issues for you without you knowing it. It is frightening that you have to be overly careful in everything that you do because someone is out there waiting to take advantage.

Nothing is harmless anymore it is very sad, but it is the reality that we have to confront.
