Digital Norms and Responsibilities

Eric Thompson

The overwhelming advantage(s) of living in the digital age is the ability to access information once (possibly) unheard of, unless one was actually 'on-site.'  Additionally, our digital age grants us access to (almost) the entire world and the ability to interact with many different races and cultures.

That said: there are a plethora of norms that in my opinion, must be followed and adhered to, responsibly.

Students:
1. Be a model representative of their school, youth group or family.
2. Engage in honest research, when working on a school project and never violate the rights of published: authors, historians, etc.
3. Do not visit sites that are vulgar in nature.
4. Do not post any photograph of a negative nature.
5. Use highly-intelligent grammar when responding on or engaging on the internet.  Once something is sent into the digital world, its mark is there forever.
6. Use all forms of social media as a positive and uplifting tool

Parents & Teachers: which sometimes are one in the same:
1. Do not take to the internet to smear colleagues of family members.
2. Always monitor for cyberbullying and communicate with the proper authorities when spotted
3. Be a perfect example of your school, church, personal business.
4. Comport yourself with the utmost professionalism at all times.  Most of the time what is not 'said,' speaks volumes.
