I made a mistake several years ago with email and it was a lesson I learned that I actually share with my 6th graders when talking about using electronic communications. A teacher I had known for several years sent out an email asking for help for a project. I responded with sarcasm about her always needing us to teach for her. I was totally kidding and would have helped her out. This was before emojis, so there was no indication I was kidding. I thought she knew me well enough that she would get it. She did not get it. I heard from other teachers that she was upset with me for sending that reply. She had taken the words literally and not how I had intended. I felt bad and apologized to her. When it is just words on a page, whether it be a text, email or a post on a social media site, your words can be taken out of context from what you intended. I learned my lesson and share this story with students to show it can occur and to be careful. Now, you can send an emoji or put your state of mind in parenthesis to show what you meant (haha, or sarcasm!).
