Digital norms and responsibilities

Rita Schechinger
When I hear mention of norms and responsibilities, social media immediately comes to mind.  It seems that people use it as an immediate way to vent frustrations, so "the drama" has been on the rise  (putting others down, openly-rudely showing disagree, blaming others, arguing/venting on controversial issues- i.e. politics, religion, etc.).  My childrens' coaches today feel that they must publicly request that parents talk to them directly and privately if they have an issue during the season.  So many people use social media to vent their frustrations and do it immediately anymore, before they've had a chance to really assess the situation and 'cool off'.  I think it is our responsibility to be respectful toward others and take time before posting when we are upset, just as we should stay calm and collect our thoughts to verbally respond appropriately when we are upset, rather than blurting out hurtful comments.  I see so much of that going on on Facebook and once it's out there and many eyes have seen it, you can't take it back.  We really need to teach our children that!
