Integrates with science- how leaves travel.
Integrates with ELA- writing, claims and evidence

Materials /Resources Needed:
-Various papers
printer paper, construction paper, card stock
-Glue
-Tape
-Paper clips
-Chair

Lesson Procedures:

1. Students will look at the picture and look at the different kinds of trees/leaves present.
2. The students will make predictions about which leaves from the different kinds of trees will travel the furthest.
3. Students will use the paper of their choice to create the leaves in order to conduct the experiment.
4. Students will be encouraged to be creative and do what they need to do in order to make the different kinds of leaves for each tree. They can tape, glue, etc as they see fit to recreate the leaves.
5. Students will carefully stand on a chair and drop their “leaves.” They will take measurements to see how far their leaves travel away from the chair and recored their measurements.
6. After all leaves are tested, the students will analyze their data and see if their predictions were correct about the leaves traveling the furthest. They will also discuss why the leaves traveled the way they did. The students will be asked to make claims and support their claims with evidence in writing.

Assessment/Evaluation:
The students’ writings and discussions will be assessed. The teacher can also do a lot of observations about how the students measure the distance and the discussions they have about their leaves. The teacher can assess the students’ claim and evidence writing to see if they are understanding the concept of claim and evidence and also see their thinking about the leaves and how they travel.
