I am a technology director for our school district and coach high school golf.  I do have many students who come in and ask about buying a computer for school/college.  When I talk to them I ask what are they going to use it for and discuss the financial side - how much do they want to pay for one.  What they are going to use it for helps determine what the cost of the computer will be.  I don't ask how they are going to pay for it, but I do let them know they need to plan for how they will be paying for it.  If they use a credit card, they will have to pay interest.  Maybe they will pay cash.
