I am a K-12 art teacher at a small school. This semester I have a class of students that work on Plato courses. A majority of them are doing this courses due to poor attendance, which led to failing grades. I think this is a good opportunity to incorporate financial literacy. Most of these students plan on enter the work force after receiving their GED's. I think relating to their situations and discussing financial planning is extremely important since most of them will go out on their own right away. Having open discussions and talking about my own experiences could help them succeed when making financial choices.
At the elementary level, I am not sure how to discuss this topic, but I do try to make the students aware that all the art supplies and other things in the school cost money. Sometimes they think we just have all this stuff for free or even their own stuff is free when their parents have actually bought it. I think this awareness is important because they learn not to take things for granted and respect it a lot more. As for the high school students, I think talking about the future and their plans is a great way to bring up financial talk. I have not thought of an art lesson to incorporate financial literacy, but I feel like teaching is also about getting to know the students and prepare them for the future and not just about test scores.
