I am a Gifted and Talented teacher and an AP Coordinator/Mentor. I feel it is a very good fit to teach financial literacy to my G/T students. They are so busy taking college classes in high school and extra curricular that they generally don't take this type of class. Since I have a pull out program K-8, I can teach this with my middle school kids. Even talking to my elementary kids about savings accounts is a great idea and showing how your money grows in an account. (Not as great as when I was a kid and we got 8% in a savings account.)
I actually have some financial literacy games my students can play to change up their learning. My 7th graders build a village, earn money, pay rent/mortgage payments, buy building supplies, day care, draw incident cards that say they inherited money, had a vehicle breakdown, etc; and have to keep track of where their money goes and how much they have left. It has been fun listening them talk about how maybe they should have built their house smaller, had a less expensive car, or not bought items that weren't necessary.
This will be the first year I plan to do financial literacy with my 8th graders. I want to talk about checking accounts, debit/credit cards, loans, and how to pay for college. I think I will get a lot out of this class that will help me in my planning.
