I'm a former high school math teacher and have stayed home with my children the past 5 years. Now that they are all in school, I volunteer in their classrooms and I plan to substitute teach at the elementary school. Having volunteered with Junior Achievement, I can see many opportunities where I could reinforce financial literacy in the elementary classroom. Students need a solid understanding of wants vs needs and they need to practice making choices. This year in Kindergarten Junior Achievement I conducted an activity that allowed students to look at a variety of pictures (food, house, clothing, candy, present, etc) and circle wants vs needs. We also talked about choices (they had to choose one big present or two smaller presents). Both activities laid the foundation for financial literacy. It's never too young to start these discussions about making good choices.
