I teach EL for 6-8th graders. As 6th graders they have a unit with JA Biztown in which they learn how to use a checkbook, how a business works, and the functions of cities. Though this is a great unit, in my own classroom we do numerous mini-units in all three grades that emphasize the financial literacy geared towards post high school-college bound life. We look at writing scholarship essays, RAI scores, and costs of college. They have the opportunity to investigate different colleges and their costs, plus plan out how they would go about funding college.
