I taught Tech Ed classes (Automotive, Wood Shop, Metals, etc.)for the first 19 of my teaching career then I taught Math for the last two years. Do to a retirement of a tech ed teacher in my building I am moving back over to tech ed. This is my third year teaching in this alternative High School, so we teach a few different classes than the other three high schools teach. We have the standard wood shop, construction, and metal classes but I also teach a class called Home Maintenance where I will be teaching a wide variety of things, from basic wiring, hanging drywall, repairing drywall after I put a hole in it, plumbing etc. I also like to include shop math in all of my classes. But having run my own automotive repair shop for 20 years before going into teaching I wish I would have taken this Financial Literacy class before every starting my own business. I learned so much more even more than I taught my students over a whole year in Consumer Math. So what I am going to do is incorporate some of the lessons I learned into my Home Maintenance class. I will teach them a wide variety of skills built into the class as I go along. The first I will teach them the difference between wants and needs because having a wife that doesn't understand the difference and a couple of my own children, Plus my two twin Grandsons detassled corn last year and they went out and blew most of their money on new watches, tennis shoes, etc. One of them bought three expensive watches and the other one bought thee different sets of new tennis shoes. They at least did buy a car to drive to school other than that most of their money was wasted on wants not needs. I am planning on going over a lot of the things in this class that they need to learn.
