Financial Literacy in the Content Area

The 5th grade students in my building have an opportunity each spring to attend JA BizTown in Des Moines, IA. JA BizTown is a setting which integrates financial literacy in its core- the operations and function of the town, its businesses and its success are reliant on the students. From paying utilities and taxes at City Hall and government offices to borrowing money at the bank and purchasing supplies at the farm store, students are the facilitators of business. Their knowledge of finances prior to arrival is a direct indicator as to how successful the day at Biz Town will be. Fifth grade classroom teachers have materials available to prepare students for success. The amount of time and depth of preparation varies by classroom. Preparation for JA BizTown is the perfect opportunity for integration of financial literacy curriculum in the 5th grade classrooms.
