Financial Literacy in the Content Area

Lori Duffy-Danker
The question asks how I would embed financial literacy in my content area. I work with identified gifted and talented students, and my role is within our student services (counseling +) department. I do have students work on independent projects.
I would embed financial literacy through student advisement. As part of a project, I would ask students to explore college and career majors/areas that interest them and to use this guiding question:  How do you want to live? Usually we ask students what they want to do. I think that is important, but I tend to ask, What do you want to do first? It is nature to meld the two- both advisement and career exploration. Financial literacy can easily become a part of the dialogue and student exploration. Students will not only research costs of career preparedness (trade schools, 2-4 year colleges, internships, apprenticeships), but they will also research what beginning and veteran salaries look like, whether or not they'll likely need to move to pursue their career elsewhere, and other aspects of financial planning.
