Financial Literacy in the Lower Elementary

Deborah Culp
As a substitute teacher, I have many opportunities to address financial literacy.  In a recent class, I read A Chair For My Mother by Vera B. Williams, illustrating how a family saved for a chair after a fire.  I can see lots of extensions that can be made using this as an opener.  Students could identify needs or wants that they have, could plan how they would earn and save toward their goal and to realize the satisfaction from achieving a goal.  Introducing students early to financial literacy can only help them in becoming savvy adults in the marketplace.
