Financial Literacy in the Music Classroom

Pamela Hayes
I teach 4-8 general music. In my 8th grade classes I present a careers in music unit. Within the unit we discuss what certain occupations generally make annually. We also discuss what education and other experience a person must have to pursue that particular career. Financial literacy could be tied in fairly easily. Part of the discussion could include how to achieve your dreams. Part of financial literacy is understanding there is a process in getting to your goals. For example, a person wanting to pursue a career in performance may have to wait tables or work in an office to pay the bills until he or she is able to find financial stability in a performance career.
