Financial Literacy, special education and transition to life after HS

Marsha Morgan
I teach Financial Literacy to transition age students, in the special education classroom.  We also incorporate some Employability skills into the FL content area, encouraging students to recognize that they must work to earn the money that they receive.  Many have other sources of income and therefore do not make this connection.  Guardianship and Financial responsibilities also come into play.  Most special education students do not have direct control over their money, and therefore have bills paid for without understanding or participating in the process.  Using Debit and Credit cards for purchases has changed the learning associated with counting and carrying money.  Classroom role-playing and earning $ (spent at the classroom store)  for positive behaviors displayed throughout the school have been motivating for students, and teach choice making and saving.
