Ways to get students thinking about the actual cost of items and how long they would have to work to pay for them.
My idea is to use visuals (such as play money perhaps) lay out money received as pay, take out taxes and savings, then ask students what items they are likely to want or have to buy during that pay period. Pull that money out. Then lay out the money to save for each period in order to buy an item. (Perhaps do this with the “big” item—this requires students to identify their wants vs needs, and priorities for the use of their pay.
