I am an At Risk Teacher so financial literacy is important for my students as they work towards graduation. I usually have a few students each year that live on their own and are trying to manage rent, a part-time job and their cell phone bill. We talk about budgeting and the importance of maintaining employment and not bouncing from job to job exhausting local employment opportunities. One activity I have the class participate in involves preparing a class meal. The objective is to purchase all ingredients and prepare the meal within 5 hours while staying within a given budget. The purpose of this project is for students to realize how much of their monthly income must be devoted to each aspect of their budget (rent, phone, food, car, etc).
