Financial literacy

Stephanie Lange
Working as a Paraeducator in a severe disabilities class room, financial literacy isnt discussed often. However I believe it could be taught in the same manner as the very basic math lessons we use. Observing the coins, perhaps clapping out their value and trading them for preferred items.
Most days We use what we refer to as a token economy board. It's a visual tool to help the student know when a task is complete, and look forward to a reward at the end.
The board (6"x 6") will have 8 blank spaces, and  picture of a preferred item. After each task is completed, the student earns one token. When the board is full the student has earned preferred item.
With my own son we started with reward for chores completed, and an envelope system. One each for Saving, giving, and spending. He argued for an allowance, we countered with, if you work, you earn.
