Several years ago, one of the teachers in my building sent an email message to our entire staff via our "All" email list. The video link in the email was meant to be funny and harmless. However; the content of the video violated our staff ethics code of conduct due to some racial stereotypes present in the video. The sender was disciplined according to our districts 'code of conduct' policy, and was eventually dismissed.
Had he shared the video with friends, or even used personal emails to share the content, there would have not been a legal issue at all.
People need to be very careful about separating personal life from their professional life regardless of whether it is digital use or not. Instant communication via text and email makes it that much simpler to have a 'slip' in judgement without being able to 'take it back'.
