The major takeaway from the three articles was the importance of integrating art into the classroom! All three articles gave many reasons for why this is so important. Art is versatile and can be easily incorporated into all other subject matters. Art gives students an opportunity to be creative in a more “relaxed” environment. I also liked the article that talked about using art with ESL students. The addition of art into the lessons, made more ESL students become engaged and participating in the lessons. As a pull out ESL teacher, I have never thought about including art in our lessons! What a fun and easy way to help students feel more relaxed and connected to their learning!
Unfortunately schools have become so focused on standardized testing that art has become pushed to the wayside. In my own school, art is left up to the classroom teacher. However, I often feel guilty when incorporating art into my lessons. It always feels like there are “more important” things to focus on. These articles helped me realize how truly important it is to be including art! One of the articles talked about how art helps students become better problem solvers. Another article talked about all the core muscles that students are working when painting on an easel. These articles made it clear that the benefits of art in the classroom are endless!
