My biggest takeaway from the articles is that teaching art in the classroom broadens knowledge for students to connect ideas to things they are currently learning, and even to things that they have learned before. In the article that cited the Chicago Area Schools study, they cited that the ESL students that maybe didn't always participate did participate in the project with the artist and the teacher. The article also cited that the students performed a play showing what they had learned from this experience and that the teacher really had to do very little to direct it, because the students were so excited about what they had learned.
What this means for me and my classroom is that art will indeed help students understand music at a broader, deeper, more connected level. They go together, and both music and art are essential in the school systems to help students want to learn at a deeper level. I will begin implementing more art into my curriculum at all levels. An easy way to get started is to ask students to draw a picture of what a song reminds them of. I can implement this immediately.
