I am very glad to have the vocabulary and terminology to use when presenting the reasons that art is a necessary subject in school. I have always felt that way, but the articles made the points so very clear. I look forward to co-planning and co-teaching "alongside the general education teacher to help ensure academic learning is happening through an art form and visa versa." (Katrina Schwartz)
I appreciated the advance rebuttals for any resistance with fellow teachers and parents that may make a team approach a bit more difficult. It is fully understandable that other classroom teachers may not feel the confidence in the art realm. I would love to work to overcome that insecurity. The school that was doing two workshops a year where teachers create art and try out lessons together sounds like a great opportunity for growth for everyone. Hopefully, when I work with the classroom teachers to find out the schedule for the topics that they are studying, these teachers will feel that I wish to collaborate with them.
Especially gratifying were the points made in the articles about how specifically the student learns creativity and problem solving as future life skills. The engagement of the student is improved when art is integrated in other subjects. Students learn acceptance in themselves and others. These are life lessons!
