Forum #4 "Beautiful"

Objective: Students can name an item/person/place that is beautiful
What makes something beautiful? Pre-K Lesson- small group
What does the word “beautiful” mean?  What can you think of that is beautiful?  (A flower, a princess…)
Read a new story with colorful pictures.  Ask the children the following questions:
*What is happening in this picture?
*What is/are he/she/they doing?
*Do you see anything in these pictures that is beautiful?
*Why do you think this (person, object, etc.) is beautiful?
*How does this story make you feel?
Re-read the story.
Check for understanding- what is beautiful to you?  Can the students name something from the story, a color or an object that is beautiful?

This lesson combines vocabulary and literacy with visual art concepts. Students learn a new vocabulary word or reinforce the word he/she already knows.

I love the idea of incorporating art into a vocabulary lesson. When working with young students, adjectives can be such an abstract concept to them, and using something physical, such as a piece of art work, is a great way to reach students. I also like that this gets students participating in discussion regarding not only language skills, but art skills as well.

This lesson had me right away with just the title.  I think finding ways to make our community beautiful and to learn to appreciate the beauty in each other would help our world greatly.  It is a wonderful find, and I love the lesson that you developed.  Nice work!
