Reading all three of these articles has given new awareness to see how the education system has been robbing the youth of learning skills in the arts. While reading the articles it made me think of all the schools I have taught in Arizona and how over time they have taken art education out of the schools and how the Arizona education system has fallen as a result. Reading the articles and seeing the data from the article “How Integrating Arts into Other Subjects Makes Learning Come Alive” and “How Arts Integration Supports Student Learning: Students Shed Light on the Connections” have shown that increasing the arts and keeping them part of the curriculum has improved grades and community.
I have only taught in the lower grade levels where we as teachers still use art and music to connect and collaborated across the curriculum on a daily base. I could have my class do a diorama in any subject to increase their knowledge by using art to express them knowledge. These tools are limitless and invaluable.
In the upper school levels where I live, I am lucky that they continue incorporate art cross content areas. In my observation when they have engaged, they have broadened student’s learning and they have improved learning enthusiasm all around. Just like the article “How Arts Integration Supports Student Learning: Students Shed Light on the Connections” they saw with the 30 students in the study.
Having arts and content together allow the students to learn to express different ways and to look at the content area with an openness and freedom. This allows greater interest and ultimately critical ways to learn and think.
