Forum Post 4: Discussion for Assignment 6

I love the use of VTS and "thinking outside the box"!  Our school has a wonderful math curriculum that provides several opportunities for students to utilize various forms of art and movement to make connections to the curriculum and standards taught.

In looking up information on this topic, I found this site: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/28/learning/introduction-to-whats-going-on-in-this-picture.html.  The New York Times posts a different picture each day that teachers in all classrooms K-12 could use as a starting point in class discussions. I feel like these could apply to any curriculum, from reading, art, math, to SEL.

I really like how you found a way to integrate visual learning that isn't just "one lesson," but something ongoing!  You shared how the New York Times posts a new picture each day and students could practice their visual literacy.  As we learned in the articles from this section, visual literacy is like reading, it is something that has to be practiced for those skills to become stronger.

Even if you didn't use this exact resource from the New York times, I could see how you could easily adapt this to your own classroom. It would work to find a new piece of artwork to look at each day.  Different activities could be used for practicing visual literacy, including whole group discussion, a writing assignment where students use the picture as a starting point to write a "story," and many more ideas.  It would be easy to adapt to just 10-15 minutes a day! Great ideas!

I really enjoy how you found a way to incorporate visual learning that is more than simply "one lesson," but rather continual!  You said how the New York Times provides a new photo each day, allowing students to improve their visual literacy.  As we discussed in the articles in Monkey Mart this area, visual literacy is similar to reading in that it must be exercised in order to strengthen those skills.
