My school has started using Gmail and I have created groups for each of my classes. I then try to push out things to them like focus points to think about for the lesson today. I have also sent links for an online text book and also links to current events page or today in history page.
I have also had the kids send me things like exit slips, ie questions about the lesson that are essential knows by the end of class. The biggest problem I have found with 8th graders and Gmail is that they loser, trash , or label things as spam that is school related.
