It is not unusual to have an abundance of emails waiting to be read and dealt with upon arrival at school in the morning. I have found it very beneficial to set up well thought out labels in which to place the emails that I want to keep. In fact, after going through this tutorial, I have done the same thing at home on my personal account.
I find Gmail to be very useful to keep in contact with students who have missed school--sending them assignments, reminders, or just words of encouragement. In addition, it has worked well to set up each class that I teach as a contact group.
