Gmail and the library

Lisa Beal
I am a K-5 librarian serving 2 libraries; a K library and a 1-5 library. Gmail for students is disabled at this level. The students all have Gmail accounts for the purpose of logging in to the Chrome Books, but they do not have email capabilities. So I do not use email with my students.
However, with my teachers, coworkers, parents, and community it is my main source of communication. I have 600 students and no aides so my time is booked. I rarely use the telephone. Gmail is the way for me to get a quick message out to someone or have them able to get ahold of me. For my kindergarten building, they will email me to check out books since I am only over there 1 period a day. For parents, it might be a quick email home reminding them about a child's overdue library books. For coworkers, I can send out a list of new titles. For the community, I will send out pictures or news to the local paper occasionally. To the other librarian in the district we often share books between buildings and email is the most efficient way to get this done with our busy schedules. For my busy principal, it is easiest to send an email that she can then ponder and reply to at her convenience.
