Gmail applications in the classroom

Lori Flanders
Since our high school is a one-on-one school with every student having a computer, the teachers , such as myself have many opportunities to use gmail. With google classroom, the students get notified through gmail of up-coming assignments posted on the google classroom. Gmail is a way for students to communicate with the teachers; which they do. The students get the announcements on gmail. Gmail has definitely added to the communication skills of our students. One teacher has recently given a lesson on email writing, as he observed how the students had very little skills in effectively writing an email. We use gmail and appreciate it at our school.

I love the idea of lesson(s) for students on how to write emails.  If our expectation is for students to be using email, and we know that in our world of technology this is an expectation of all technology savvy individuals, then we must also make sure that we are giving our students the knowledge and skills to navigate the tech world and effectively communicate in the school and real world settings.

I think students will greatly benefit from learning to write clear, concise and cohesive emails. Too often we overlook written communication, which I feel is still very important in student and career life.

That's great that you are giving a lesson on how to write emails.  Since every student has an email, I have received many emails from students that I would deem unprofessional and would never imagine sending to a college professor.  There were times where I would receive emails without a subject or all the letters are in pink.  I am really glad that someone is taking the time to work with students on how to write emails.
