As a substitute, I have seen students use gmail to check on their assignments and messages from teachers, it is especially good for those that have missed class/assignments. If they have questions on things covered in class while they were absent, they can send a quick message to their teacher.
I love the new translation feature for students or parents who speak little English.
I have found the label and filter features to be very helpful for keeping my emails organized. The calendar is great for setting up reminders.
