Gmail in the classroom

As a high school teacher, I believe that Gmail can be an effective tool for assignment reminders.  I like that there would be a record of information going back and forth between teacher and student.  I also see the advantage of setting up a contact list for each section of my classes so that I can make those reminders more personal to the material covered in their class.  Gmail also allows student access to the teacher beyond classroom hours.
