In my current position, my agency will be moving to Gmail in the next few months. I will use 'labels' and groups to e-mail those whom I communicate with for creating my larger group 'listserves'.
In regards to classrooms, I work with educators and I'm going to send out an e-mail with directions on how they can turn on the 'Translation' option in the Labs to hopefully assist with some parent communication for basic correspondences. As with any online translation tool, we know it isn't 100% accurate, but if they use this feature for basic information sharing and consider the complexity of the language they use (using simple language patterns, minus idioms and multiple meaning words, etc...), hopefully this could be a way to open some doors to families, given they use Gmail.
