I think that Gmail will become an efficient way to communicate with students who are working on projects at home. My students work on Code.org in class, but quite a few also work at home. They will sometimes comment that they needed help with something over the weekend or breaks. This year, our students also have Gmail accounts, so communicating back and forth will be much simpler.
